Chaotic light at mid-infrared wavelength

چکیده
The onset of nonlinear dynamics and chaos is evidenced in a mid-infrared distributed feedback quantum cascade laser both in the temporal and frequency domains. As opposed to the commonly observed route to chaos in semiconductor lasers, which involves undamping of the laser relaxation oscillations, quantum cascade lasers first exhibit regular self-pulsation at the external cavity frequency before entering into a chaotic low-frequency fluctuation regime. The bifurcation sequence, similar to that already observed in class A gas lasers under optical feedback, results from the fast carrier relaxation dynamics occurring in quantum cascade lasers, as confirmed by numerical simulations. Such chaotic behavior can impact various practical applications including spectroscopy, which requires stable single-mode operation. It also allows the development of novel mid-infrared highpower chaotic light sources, thus enabling secure free-space high bit-rate optical communications based on chaos synchronization. Extended phase matching of high harmonics driven by mid-infrared light.
We demonstrate that phase-matched frequency upconversion of ultrafast laser light can be extended to shorter wavelengths by using longer driving laser wavelengths. Experimentally, we show that the phase-matching cutoff for harmonic generation in argon increases from 45 to 100 eV when the driving laser wavelength is increased from 0.8 to 1.3 microm. Phase matching is also obtained at higher pres...
متن کاملZnO subwavelength wires for fast-response mid-infrared detection.
Room temperature operating thermal detection for mid-infrared light based on ZnO subwavelength wires has been demonstrated. Electric resistance in ZnO wires increases linearly with the intensity of incident light. Noise equivalent power (NEP) of 5.8 microW/Hz(1/2) (at 1 kHz) with typical response times as fast as 1.3 ms is obtained at 10.6-microm wavelength. The sensitivity and response time of...
متن کاملThe Nonspherical Shape of Betelgeuse in the Mid-infrared
Three-telescope interferometric observations from the Infrared Spatial Interferometer (ISI) are reported at spatial frequencies that resolve the size and shape of the star Betelgeuse (a Ori) at a wavelength of 11.15 mm with a bandwidth of 0.18 cm . The data include closure phase measurements, the first such measurements of a stellar 1 disk in the mid-infrared. The data indicate a clear asymmetr...
متن کاملThe Nucleus of Deep Impact Target Comet 9P/Tempel 1
On UT 2000 August 21 we obtained simultaneous visible and mid-infrared observations of comet 9P/Tempel 1, the target of the upcoming NASA Discovery Program mission Deep Impact. The comet was still quite active while 2.55 AU from the Sun (post-perihelion). Two independent analyses of our data, one parameterizing the coma morphology and the other modeling infrared spectrophotometry, show that the...
متن کاملThe Mid-Infrared Luminosity Evolution and Luminosity Function of Quasars with <em>WISE</em> and SDSS
We determine the 22 μm luminosity evolution and luminosity function for quasars from a data set of over 20,000 objects obtained by combining flux-limited Sloan Digital Sky Survey optical and Wide field Infrared Survey Explorer mid-infrared data. We apply methods developed in previous works to access the intrinsic population distributions non-parametrically, taking into account the truncations a...
